How the take-home estimate is produced

PayScope does not reproduce a national payroll engine. It estimates take-home pay from Eurostat's harmonised net-earnings scenarios, which makes the output useful for comparable European salary exploration but less precise than an official payslip calculator.

Interpolation method

For each country, published net-to-gross ratios are aligned to gross earnings at 50%, 67%, 100%, 133% and 167% of average pay where observations are available. Your gross salary is expressed as a percentage of that country's average, and the net ratio is linearly interpolated between the surrounding points. Outside the published range, the nearest endpoint ratio is used.

Estimated net pay is gross pay multiplied by that ratio. The deductions figure is gross minus estimated net. Reverse calculations use a bounded binary search on the same curve, so gross-to-net and net-to-gross scenarios remain internally consistent.

Why results differ from a payslip

Eurostat scenarios use defined household assumptions to compare tax and benefit systems. Your outcome can differ because of marital status, children, tax residence, allowances, social-contribution caps, bonuses, benefits in kind and payroll timing.

Important limitations

  • Use the figure for comparison and budgeting, not for filing taxes or accepting a contract.
  • Interpolation smooths policy thresholds and cannot reproduce every bracket or benefit cliff.
  • Tax rules can change after the latest published annual observation.

Primary source: Eurostat annual net earnings (earn_nt_net).

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are these estimates?

They interpolate between Eurostat's published net-to-gross ratios at 50%, 67%, 100%, 133% and 167% of the average wage. Real payroll can differ due to allowances, tax classes, and social security ceilings.

Which currency should I enter?

Use the 'Input in {local}' toggle: off means gross in euros, on means gross in the country's local currency (converted to EUR using the JSON rate). For EUR countries the toggle is disabled.

Why does deduction % rise for high salaries?

Most European tax systems are progressive, and social contributions taper off at high incomes - Eurostat's ratios capture the net effect.
